Chiropractic Medicine: Six Conditions Remedied

Because chiropractic medicine focuses on musculoskeletal and nervous system disorders as well as their effect on the body at large, many people make the assumption that chiropractic is only successful in treating back pain. And while spinal manipulation is the bulk of what chiropractors do, many also have postgraduate training and board certification in areas such as pediatrics, clinical nutrition, neurology, orthopedics, physical rehabilitation, sports/athletic injury, and acupuncture.

Here are six conditions that may be addressed with chiropractic care.

Digestive Issues

There are specific nerves located in the thoracic (chest and abdomen) region of the spine which are associated with digestion. These nerves begin sending erratic impulses to the stomach and intestines, if the thoracic vertebrae are out of alignment, leading to digestive problems such as bloating, gas, and heartburn. Additionally, spinal issues such as herniated discs can cause problems with digestion.  Keeping the thoracic spine nerves unobstructed promotes digestive healing and optimal function.

Headaches

When headaches are the result of neck and upper back pain chiropractors can relax muscles in these areas using both manipulation and massage, thereby relieving the headache. Even chronic headaches have been eliminated through chiropractic treatment.

High Blood Pressure

Fifty individuals with high blood pressure and misaligned vertebra in their neck participated in a University of Chicago study. After just one chiropractic session, their blood pressure dropped significantly—and the drop was equal to taking two blood pressure meds at once!

Neck Pain

Aches and pains that are experienced in the neck can be eased by spinal manipulation. Movement assessments may also be done by chiropractors to discover if the pain is actually coming from the neck or stemming from the shoulders. Once the root cause has been discovered the symptoms will then be relieved. In a study held at Korea Nazarene University patients who received chiropractic treatment for neck pain showed notable improvements in flexibility and range of motion.

Pregnancy Pain

The top reasons pregnant women see a chiropractor are for lower-back pain and sciatica leading to improper pelvic alignment. Since many pain relief treatments have the potential to affect the fetus, the options for expectant mothers are extremely limited. For this reason, many women choose chiropractic medicine.
